FAQ

What to expect in your first Brazilian Jiujitsu class
At Ronin we understand it can be daunting trying something new so we have created an inclusive, judgement free, fun environment for all people to learn Jiujitsu. If you have any questions about the gym or classes please don't hesitate to contact us.

Which class should I attend?
If you have never trained Brazilian Jiujitsu or another grappling style before we recommend you make attending our Fundamentals program your priority for your first sixteen weeks at Ronin. If you wish to also attend other classes in this time you are free to do so as the more time you spend on the mat the faster you will improve.
The sixteen week fundamentals program will teach you to the techniques and concepts required to then transition into our other classes.

What is the structure of a Fundamentals class?
Each fundamentals class you will learn two techniques that are closely linked together and their underpinning concepts. You will then pair up with other students and drill these techniques.
After the technical portion of the class you will then do specific positional sparing from the position taught in that class. This is your chance try out what you have learnt that class on a resisting opponent.
After the specific training there will be an opportunity for student to do free sparing if they wish. This enables students to better understand how the different positions taught fit together in combination.

What should I bring?
For your first class simply wear a t-shirt and sports shorts. We have rash shirts and grappling shorts available for sale at the gym. We do not have a strict uniform policy unlike many other franchise gyms, so if you already own your own gear feel free to wear it regardless of the affiliation or branding.
You should also bring with you a water bottle and wear footwear in and out of the gym.
Please maintain decent personal hygiene and keep finger and toe nails cut short. We have showers three at the gym downstairs and staff can provided you with nail clippers on request.
